Lake Como is one of the most romantic places in the world, making it the perfect backdrop for a marriage proposal. Here are some ideas and insider tips from experienced photographers and videographers to help you plan an unforgettable proposal.

The “undercover” proposal
Our first category in the proposal types. Basically, in this scenario your partner doesn’t suspect or know a thing. You arrive at the agreed upon location in the agreed upon time, where we, the photographers, wait for you with our long distance lenses, posing as tourists and blending into the surroundings.
If you’ve booked a video and want your speech be captured, sneak out “into the bathroom” so that we attach a tiny microphone onto you, we’ll be too far away for the camera to capture your voice otherwise.
We discreetly capture every detail of the moment, and come out after you’ve popped the question for a portrait session with you and your now fiancé.

The “photoshoot” proposal
You tell your partner you’ve booked a couple’s photoshoot to capture some lovely memories together. This allows your partner to feel prepared and dressed up for photos, and requires less coordination on your end than the first proposal option.
The SUPER PRO TIP would be to make your partner be the one to suggest and plan the photoshoot! This way they definitely won’t be suspecting anything, all while you plan out the surprise proposal behind their back with the photographer.
We, the photographers, proceed with a “standard” couple’s photoshoot and at some point guide your partner in a specific pose that gives you the cue to reveal the ring. The surprise and joy on your partner’s face will be beautifully captured forever!

lake como proposal locations
Lake Como is full of scenic spots that could serve as backdrop for the proposal, but there are some things to keep in mind when choosing “the one”:
– Authentic towns like Varenna, Bellagio, or Como offer cute romantic streets and lakeside views free of charge, but will surely be bustling with tourists. Early mornings and off-season months are best for some privacy.
– To bring the vibes up a notch, you can book one of the iconic lakeside villas, like Villa del Balbianello, Villa Melzi, or Villa Monastero. Check their rules and restrictions on the official websites first. Often proposals and photoshoots are organised during the villas’ open hours, so there might be other visitors around. Not all venues allow proposal set ups either.
– Our SPECIAL TIP – propose on a boat for an even more unforgettable experience! It’s just the two of you (and the driver, and the photographer potentially…), surrounded by sparkling waters and breathtaking views. And you can still pull of the “undercover” proposal: hire the iconic wooden boat for the two of you and a simpler, secondary boat for the photographers. This way, we capture the magic from a distance without disrupting the moment.
